The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), led by Dalhousie University, is thrilled to announce that the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition (COLC) is now an affiliated OFI program.
Launched in 2018, COLC is a centre for ocean literacy collaboration, research, and innovation. Their goal is to empower Canadians to better understand, value, and care for the ocean.
By transitioning the centre’s administrative home periodically, COLC is committed to fostering new connections. The transition also affirms that COLC is a national initiative broader than any specific entity.
The centre’s first administrative home was the Canadian Museum of Nature and most recently Ocean Networks Canada at the University of Victoria.
“We recognize what a privileged opportunity it is to move from one world class institution to another. In becoming part of OFI and a multi-institutional research community, we are excited to help lead interdisciplinary research collaborations across geographies and generations that are focused on societal-ocean relationships and transformative action,” says Diz Glithero, executive director of the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition.
New opportunities for collaborative action
The partnership between OFI and COLC will enable collaboration in new and exciting ways to share knowledge about the ocean and strengthen community engagement.
“COLC is a national and global leader in ocean literacy, helping to bridge ocean science and policy with society,” says Dr. Anya Waite, OFI’s chief executive officer and scientific director.
“We are thrilled to work with them more closely as they join the OFI community, building more opportunities for broader societal engagement in ocean research, solutions, stewardship, and climate action.”
