About

Mairi Miller-Meehan

Why are you involved on this project?

My interests lie at the intersection of social and ecological systems. My goal is to support an improved understanding of ecosystem change from diverse perspectives to ensure conservation and sustainability initiatives support the people and species for which they are intended. Western science provides one component to understanding environmental change. Local knowledge and understanding have historically been devalued and excluded from decision-making and evaluation processes.

How does your work relate to Nunatsiavut?

My interests and experience can support sustainable Nunatsiavut futures by using social-ecological systems thinking that combines qualitative and quantitative methods to incorporate the knowledge held by community members about how the environment is understood and how change is measured. This project was conceived and brought forth in partnership with the Nunatsiavut government and local communities to co-produce knowledge about the marine ecosystem and enhance capacity in marine research using community-engaged research and scientific methods.

What is your favourite outdoor activity?

everything on, in, and around the water. Especially kayak, snorkel and scuba diving.

What is your favourite place in the world?

My favorite place in the world is between the sea and the sky. There are too many amazing places on this earth, I cannot pick one on a map. I love being at the waters edge, observing life above and below the surface.
